A Complete Guide to Drive From Wheelchair & Internal Transfer WAVs
Can a Wheelchair User Drive?
The answer to whether a wheelchair user can drive is Yes. Many wheelchair users can drive independently thanks to specialist Drive From Wheelchair (DFW) vehicle conversions. Many wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV’s) are designed for the wheelchair user to travel as a passenger either in the rear or in the upfront passenger position. A drive from wheelchair vehicle means you can travel independently from either a wheelchair or a 6-way seat in the driving position.
At Sirus Mobility, we’re known as the ‘Upfront Specialists’ thanks to our unique range of wheelchair accessible vehicles.
What Is a Drive From Wheelchair (DFW) Vehicle?
A Drive From Wheelchair vehicle is designed so you can enter the vehicle, position yourself in the driver area, and drive without transferring from your wheelchair. These conversions typically include:
- Automated tailgate and ramp
- Automated wheelchair docking system
- Flat-floor design for easy manoeuvrability
Our Drive From Range
We offer two main types of wheelchair driving solutions:
Both are built on the Ford Grand Tourneo Connect platform in Titanium specification, which offers excellent space, comfort, and modern technology.
Ford Connect Drive From
This DFW conversion allows you to drive the vehicle from the comfort of your wheelchair. You enter the vehicle from the rear with an automated tailgate and the ramp is slowly released. This enables you to drive up to the driver’s position without any assistance and your wheelchair can be secured using a docking station. There’s a button on the dashboard to close the ramp and tailgate, or you can press the button on the key fob.
Is the Drive From WAV right for me?
A Drive From WAV is ideal if:
- You want maximum independence
- You prefer to remain in your wheelchair
- You are unable or prefer not to transfer into a standard car seat
- You use a crash‑tested electric wheelchair, required for safety and proper docking
This solution is perfect for those with limited mobility who want control and freedom.
Ford Connect Internal Transfer
The Internal Transfer WAV offers the same premium entry system—automated tailgate and shallow ramp—but gives you the option to transfer from your wheelchair to the powered 6‑way driver’s seat.
Why Choose Internal Transfer?
- Maintain the ability to drive in a standard seat
- Transfer safely using a powered seat that moves:
- Up/down
- Forward/back
- Side to side
- Secure your wheelchair in the rear after transferring
This solution is ideal for those with the upper-body strength to transfer from a wheelchair to a seat and for those who use a manual wheelchair.

What if I don’t want to drive all the time?
Both the Drive From and Internal Transfer WAVs give you the option to travel upfront as a passenger.
Our Drive From WAV’s interchangeable front seats allow you to swap between driver and upfront passenger at any point in your journey.
This is ideal for long journeys or days when you’d prefer not to drive.
Wheelchair requirements
To travel safely in a Drive From Wheelchair or Internal Transfer vehicle, you must use a crash-tested wheelchair that meets safety regulations and can be secured using:
- High-quality restraints, or
- An automatic docking station
This ensures maximum safety whether you’re driving or travelling as a passenger.
In summary
Can a wheelchair user drive? Yes, when choosing the right WAV, you should first consider whether you want to travel in the rear or in the front. Then it comes down to a choice of driving from your wheelchair or transferring to the standard driver’s seat. Driving from your wheelchair or transferring internally allows you to travel solo without assistance.
Our mobility advisors can happily help you choose the right WAV, and we can arrange a free home demonstration to allow you to test drive the car in your own surroundings.
