Access, seating and space – things to consider before purchasing a wheelchair accessible car
Our latest guide will help you navigate the various choices and options when selecting a wheelchair accessible vehicle. We will consider your preferred seating position, parking, additional seats for passengers, and any bespoke adaptations required.
Accessibility requirements for a wheelchair accessible car.
Where would you like to sit?
Firstly, we would recommend deciding if you want to drive or travel as a passenger. Sirus offers a range of wheelchair accessible vehicles for drivers and passengers. We design Drive From Wheelchair, Internal Transfer, Upfront Passenger and Rear Passenger solutions. We also offer a wide range of adaptations for standard cars if you do not need a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
What seating do you require for additional passengers / carers?
The right wheelchair car for you may depend on how many seats you need, as this will determine the size. Sirus accessible vehicles are usually medium sized WAVs as opposed to the larger conversions such as the Mercedes Sprinter. Our rear passenger new wavs for sale accommodate up to six people, this includes the Ford Connect (space for six people) and the Dacia Jogger (also offers space for six people).
Do you prefer rear or side entry access?
There are advantages to both options and it is all down to personal choice. Rear entry wheelchair cars are very popular due to the ease when parking in a standard Blue Badge parking space. However many of our customers prefer a side entry WAV as they are great for on-street parking. This design also retains the rear seats and standard boot space.
What interior space do you require?
What is the best car for wheelchairs that are larger/wider or the best car for taller wheelchair users? All conversions state a maximum head height vary. Once you have decided on your seating position, chat to our team about your head height. You can give us a rough idea over the phone before our demonstration, and we will be able to confirm your seated head height on your home demonstration.
What additional adaptations do you require?
Sirus can install a wide range of bespoke adaptations to standard cars and WAVs. Our team of mobility specialists will work with you to find the right solutions and our experienced engineers will install the adaptations at our factory in Wednesbury. Our wide range of car adaptations includes speed control, steering, pedal and clutch modifications, hand controls, seating solutions and hoists to help you get in and out of the car, or hoists to help lift and stow your wheelchair or scooter.
