The Role of Assistive Technology in Vehicles for Wheelchair Accessibility
Automotive technology is evolving fast, and that includes the world of wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Automation is no longer just an idea for the future, it’s actively reshaping how these vehicles work, making driving and travelling much easier and safer for drivers and passengers.
In this blog, we will explore some of the key wheelchair accessible vehicle features that are transforming accessibility across the Dacia Jogger and Ford Connect vehicle range.
Voice-activated controls for greater independence
Voice-activated systems have come a long way, allowing drivers to manage everything from climate settings to navigation using just their voice.
For wheelchair users with limited hand mobility, this hands-free control is not just convenient, it’s essential for safety and independence.
Modern voice assistants becoming more sophisticated and capable of understanding a wider range of natural speech, commands and languages.
Both the Dacia Jogger and the Ford Connect have options for voice-activated control of radio, music, navigation, phone, and Bluetooth through their Technology and Comfort packages, making every journey easier and more accessible.
Sensor technologies and adaptive controls
Sensor systems such as blind spot detection, parking assistance, and obstacle warnings are becoming increasingly common, acting like an extra pair of eyes. They not only enhance safety but also give drivers greater confidence on the road.
The Ford Connect features advanced safety systems including Pre-Collision Assist with Auto Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning. These systems alert the driver if the vehicle ahead slows down or stops, providing both audio and visual warnings. If the driver’s response is delayed, braking assistance is applied automatically.
Meanwhile, the Dacia Jogger offers adaptive features like Active Blind Spot Warning, which alerts drivers via warning lights in the door mirrors when vehicles are detected in the blind spot. It also provides notifications if the car in front slows down or stops, helping prevent collisions through timely alerts and automatic braking assistance when needed.
Automated accessibility technology
Modern wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) now include automated technology designed to make access and travel easier for wheelchair users.
A key feature is the automated wheelchair ramp, available in the Ford Connect. The key fob opens the tailgate and ramp, allowing safe entry via the shallow, anti-slip ramp, which is set at less than 11 degrees to make entering and exiting effortless, even in wet conditions.
Once the driver is comfortably seated, a simple press of a button on the dashboard or key fob closes the tailgate and ramp. Ramps can be fitted to either the rear or side of the vehicle, depending on the conversion, making them versatile for different needs.
This technology saves time, reduces physical strain for caregivers, and ensures both the wheelchair and occupant remain safe throughout the journey, providing complete peace of mind.
Balancing innovation with cost and availability
While many wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) features are exciting, there are some practical considerations to keep in mind.
Not every mainstream vehicle can be converted, as factors such as space, headroom, and wheelchair seating position mean only certain models are suitable.
With over two decades of experience, Sirus has continually refined and innovated WAV conversions since 2004, using bespoke engineering to overcome these challenges and enhance comfort, safety, and independence.
It’s also worth noting that not all features come as standard. Some are offered only as optional extras or available exclusively on premium models, which can increase the overall cost.
That said, as assistive technology becomes more widespread, prices are expected to fall, and accessibility options are likely to expand across a broader range of vehicles.
