Celebrating VE Day During Lockdown

Friday 8th May will mark 75 years since VE Day as the United Kingdom remembers the end of the Second World War.

Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared May 8th a public holiday and Victory in Europe (VE) Day was met with parties, dancing and singing in the streets. Sadly this year, the planned events will be far more subdued due to the current lockdown and social distancing measures. But there are still many different ways you can celebrate and honour this occasion with your loved ones, safely at home.

Lockdown VE Day celebration ideas

  1. At 11am there will be a two-minute silence to mark the end of the Second World War.
  1. Decorate the front of your house in our national colours and have a toast on your doorstep or in your front garden at 3pm.
  1. The Queen will make a speech at 9pm on BBC1 – the same time as her father, King George VI, gave a historic radio address on May 8th, 1945. You can then join in the war-time sing-along lead by none other than Dame Vera Lynn!
  1. Leave a message on the Royal British Legion website to show your appreciation and add your words of thanks to a message board.
  1. Teach your children about VE Day and use this fabulous learning pack designed by the Royal British Legion.
