Did you know you can apply to Motability Grants, the charity for funding towards your converted or adapted vehicle? The charity may also fund the cost of driving lessons and any additional adaptations you require. In September 2019, Motability Operations (the company responsible for operating the Scheme) announced an £800 million donation to the charity! Amazing news for people with mobility needs.
Lord Sterling, Chairman of Motability said “Motability Operations has announced the decision to make a donation of £800million to Motability’s endowment fund, which will provide an excellent long-term insurance policy for our beneficiaries and their ongoing mobility needs. The endowment fund will help us to continue to enhance the lives of disabled people by helping with their transportation needs and independence. Plans include the expansion of our Drive-from-Wheelchair vehicle programme; increasing passenger Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle grant-funding; extending driving lesson support and funding; and accelerating support of the Family Fund Mobility Scheme, to help families with severely disabled children under the age of three who have significant mobility needs”. Some of the funds will also be used to help more disabled people gain access to employment. Motability is working with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide grants to people who have applied for Access to Work.
What Should You Do Now?
If you are thinking about using the Scheme, we recommend you speak to Motability and apply for financial help. Funding is available for drivers and passengers, for wheelchair accessible vehicles and adapted standard cars. You will be asked about your circumstances and if they think you may qualify for a Charitable Grant, they will send you an application form to complete.
Who is Eligible?
Motability may be able to provide Charitable Grants to disabled people who would otherwise be unable to afford a vehicle, adaptations or driving lessons. All applications are means-tested and any help they give is towards the best value solution to help you cope with your mobility needs.
